WELCOME TO THE 2024 SUMMER SCHOOL ON
NATIONAL MINORITIES!
The ECMI and the Coppieters Foundation team
are thrilled to welcome you to the 14th Annual
Summer School on National Minorities. We are
deeply grateful to our partners, lecturers, and
students for their collaboration in making this
year’s program a reality.
BACKGROUND ON THIS YEAR’S TOPIC
In the dynamic landscape of contemporary European society, preserving and promoting
minority and minoritized languages have become crucial for maintaining cultural richness
and diversity. Strategic language policies are essential to fostering linguistic vitality,
especially in the face of rising right-wing populism and nationalist tendencies. This year, our
Annual Summer School on National Minorities convenes in Bratislava, Slovakia, under the
theme "Voices Unheard: Challenges & Future of Minority Language Rights." We aim to bring
together students, practitioners, experts, and academics passionate about this topic.
Our innovative program blends academic rigor with engaging, non-formal educational
approaches and expert-led discussions, offering a unique learning opportunity. This year’s
highlight is a specially curated field trip to southern Slovakia's Hungarian minority area,
featuring interactions with local communities and institutions. Through an interdisciplinary
lens that spans political science to anthropology, we will explore pressing issues like the
evolution of language policies, the impact of national frameworks on minority languages,
and the burgeoning role of digital technology in language preservation.
Get ready for an exciting and enriching experience at the 2024 Summer School on National
Minorities!
