The discussion will also examine the effectiveness of existing EU policies and frameworks
for minority language protection and explore potential improvements. Additionally, the
panel will analyze the impact of EU enlargement on minority language rights, considering
both the opportunities and threats posed by these changes. The strategies employed by
speakers of Catalan and Basque languages will be discussed as potential models for other
minority languages within the EU. Following the main discussion, a World Café session will
allow for more intimate discussions between students and panelists, fostering deeper
engagement with the topics at hand.

The role of media in contributing to the sustainability of language communities and
linguistic diversity has been recognised over many decades by activists, researchers and
policy makers alike (see for example, Cormack & Hourigan, 2007; Jones & Uribe-Jongbloed
2013; Lainio et al 2019). Today, with such transformations taking place across the three
tenets of communications 3 the means of production, dissemination and consumption 3
what kind of mediascapes can support minoritized languages? This talk will explore policy
and practice across a range of European contexts and will consider the input of the players,
provisions and platforms, with a view to identifying recommendations for future action.
